School kids' feet warmed by winter knitters

More than 200 pairs of feet are feeling a little warmer this winter thanks to a group of eager knitters.

Heather McKenzie put the word out to fellow residents at Stoke Village when her daughter Briar, a Kaiako at Birchwood School, mentioned to her that kids were coming to school with wet shoes or no socks.

Teaming up with some of the ‘Nellie Knitters’ group, they were able to put together more than 200 pairs of woolen slippers in just three weeks for tamariki at the school.

Heather says she has covered the cost of wool for the pairs she has knitted.

Every pair of feet in Durham Hub was kitted in the slippers last week.

Kaiako Briar says they have made a huge difference to her class during the cooler winter days.

Slippers remain in the classroom at the end of each day.
