Edge Art Exhibition

Date: 09/05/2025
Time: 10:00
Edge is a collective exhibition that explores the precipice of change, where six diverse artists meet to challenge their own boundaries of form and thought. They invite viewers to contemplate the edges of their art at this particular point in their creative journey.

Physical edges form an integral role in an artwork, from the edges of a canvas or piece of paper, to lines of transition where colours, textures and different surfaces meet. Conceptually, edge offers interesting ideas to explore such as: standing on the edge, as in being in a dangerous place; being on edge, edgy; being on the brink; being over or beyond the edge; or being in the margins, furthest from centre. And, in another direction, edging forward and making things happen, which all these artists are committed to both in their individual art practices, and as a collective.

Artworks will include both 2D paintings, collage and printmaking, and 3D installations.

Lisa Chandler, Emma Lay, Kathy Reilly, Elaine Robinson, Marion Towns, and Pauline Watts commenced working together in 2021, meeting monthly in their respective art studios to support each others’ creative endeavours. Quickly forming a tight bond of shared experiences, the group called themselves Paynes Grey, a favourite paint colour they all like to use in their art. In 2023, they undertook a weekend residency together at Mangarakau Swamp, and they are looking forward to holding their first group exhibition at The Mckee Gallery in 2025.
