Port Nelson’s latest addition, the pilot launch Mānuka, was officially welcomed on Thursday morning with a blessing ceremony led by local iwi representatives.
The event, held at the port's Coastal Berth, brought together iwi, Port Nelson representatives, and local government officials from Nelson City and Tasman District Councils. The name Mānuka, gifted by iwi, carries deep local significance, referencing Haulashore Island, also known as Mānuka.
Port Nelson Chief Executive Matt McDonald described the new vessel as a purpose-built investment in safety and efficiency.
At 17.3 metres, the Hart Marine vessel is larger and more stable than its predecessor, Waimea II, making it better equipped to handle the variable sea conditions of Tasman Bay.
“Mānuka is an important step forward for our operations,” McDonald said. “Its design ensures safer pilot transfers and reflects our commitment to providing reliable services for all vessels navigating our waters.”
After the blessing, Mānuka immediately went into action, joining Waimea II for a training exercise in Nelson Harbour. The vessel’s enhanced features are expected to bolster Port Nelson’s capabilities and safety standards significantly.
