“The matriarch of the Nelson Police Station”, a woman who “literally breathed netball” and “the glue that holds us together”.
Fallen Nelson police officer Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming was farewelled at the Trafalgar Centre this afternoon with full Police honours and emotional tributes from her whānau, Police family and Nelson College for Girls sport director.
She was remembered as someone who never sought fame or the limelight even when she deserved it on many occasions, particularly for her unceasing dedication to her Police career and netball.
Son Aren Olsen paid tribute to his mother, saying "words can't come close to describing the character and the strength of Lyn".
Daughter Rayna Olsen described her mother as "my everything".
"You have always been my figure of strength, and there is so much more I wanted to share in this life with you," she said.
"You gave your heart and soul to absolutely everything you did to everyone around you, and I could have not asked for a better or more beautiful life than the one you have made for us.
"I know you have been tired mum, but you can rest now, I love you so much."
Lyn's brother Michael "Woody" Fleming spoke of idolising his older sister in their younger years for her protective nature, one of the hallmarks of her life.
He elaborated Lyn's humility, saying she would often avoid ceremonies which entailed her recognition, because she believed she didn't deserve awards any more than the team around her.
"The fact that she has become an historical figure is going to annoy the hell out of her," he said.
"Our family will never be the same again, but we are determined to survive this."
"If we don't, then Lyn's life and all she stood for will have been in vain, and we won't let that happen."
More than 1000 people attend her funeral which included Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Police Commissioner Richard Chambers, Police Minister Mark Mitchell, Associate Police Minister Casey Costello, Nelson Mayor Nick Smith, and Nelson MP Rachel Boyack.
A motorcade, guard of honour, a Police haka, and a flag presentation to Lyn’s family concluded the service.
