Waka Kotahi (NZTA) has warned detours following a near-Atawhai crash before midday today are not approved for high productivity motor vehicles (HPMV’s).

A car and motorbike collision, which left one person seriously injured, closed State Highway 6 near Atawhai Dr, and advises the identified vehicles must park up and wait until the intersection with Queen Elizabeth II Dr reopens.

The agency says while motorists should delay their journeys through the area, there are different detours they must follow from both directions.

Northbound traffic is being detoured right off Queen Elizabeth II Dr onto Trafalgar St.

“Left onto Wainui St, continue on to Weka St, left onto Atawhai Dr, curve right and continue on Atawhai Dr, left onto a short unnamed road opposite 330 Atawhai Dr, and right onto SH6 Queen Elizabeth II Dr / SH6 Atawhai Dr,” it says.

Southbound traffic is being detoured left off the Queen Elizabeth II Dr and Atawhai Dr intersection.

“Onto Malvern Ave, right onto Atawhai Dr, curve left and continue on Atawhai Drive, right onto Weka St, continue on Wainui St, right onto Trafalgar St, left back onto SH6 Queen Elizabeth II Dr,” it says.

Waka Kotahi says motorists must follow the directions of emergency services on site.
