Simplicity Funerals Nelson marks 10 years

Simplicity Funerals Nelson is celebrating a decade of dedicated service to the community. Part of InvoCare NZ, the team are proud of the family of brands across the country, each with a long history of local people serving local communities in times of need. Since 2015, Simplicity has built a reputation for providing compassionate, tailored support to families during life’s most challenging times.

As Simplicity reaches this milestone, a new chapter begins under the leadership of Barry Holmwood. Bringing his extensive experience and a deep personal connection to the region, Barry started in the industry in 1986. “It’s wonderful to be back in my hometown,” he says. “My family is here, and it feels great to return to a community I love.” Originally a machinist, Barry’s curiosity about casket-making led him to funeral directing, which became his true calling. He holds a Diploma in Funeral Service and achieved the Noel McNee Award for top practical embalming.

Barry has travelled extensively, gaining insight into various cultures and funeral rites. Notably, he visited Palermo, Sicily, where he saw Rosalia Lombardo, known as "The Sleeping Beauty", a remarkably preserved child in the Capuchin Catacombs. This experience deepened his understanding of how different cultures honour their loved ones. Barry is available to talk about funerals, customs, and traditions. He believes every farewell should reflect the life and personality of the individual, ensuring a true celebration of their journey.

Barry is joined by a skilled team, including Ethan Williams, who holds a Diploma in Funeral Directing, and Karla Blight. Together, they bring knowledge, empathy and dedication to the families they serve. Reflecting on industry changes, Barry notes the shift from traditional services to more personalised celebrations of life. “It’s wonderful to see families making ceremonies deeply personal. As humans, we need that moment to process grief and honour our loved ones,” he says. Whether incorporating classic cars, music, or a 21-gun salute, Barry believes these personal touches make all the difference. “We make it simple and easy for families, but the service is exceptional,” Barry says. “It’s about listening, understanding, and providing the best possible care.”

Simplicity Funerals is an integral part of the Nelson/Tasman community, run by local people. The funeral home supports initiatives like Project Butterfly, which provides small Christmas posies for children’s graves, along with other sponsorships across Nelson and Tasman. As Simplicity Funerals marks ten years, Barry attributes its success to the team. “It’s definitely the team - their experience, life skills, and ability to listen - that sets us apart.” With a commitment to compassionate service, Simplicity Funerals Nelson looks forward to continuing its legacy for years to come.
