A team of young swimmers from the Tasman Swim Club excelled at the Apollo Projects Junior Festival in Dunedin earlier month.

Nine athletes, seven girls and two boys, aged from nine to 12, travelled south for the Makos three-day swim meet which attracted 165 junior athletes.

Ten-year-old Sybella Etheridge led the way, winning the 50 and 100 metres breaststroke, the 50m backstroke and 100m individual medley. Elysa Orchiston, also 10, took out the butterfly and the 200m breaststroke.

Eleven-year-old Charlie Tuthill won the girls’ 100m freestyle and was runner-up in seven other events.

The team finished with seven firsts, 17 seconds and eight thirds and 68 personal best times from the 82 events they competed in.

That placed the Tasman Swim Club second best across the country in percentages for teams that entered between 51 and 100 age grade events.
