Murchison, with its deep farming roots, has a long and proud history tied to dairying. The region’s farming story began in the early 1900s when the first dairy factory opened in 1909, and butter—famously branded “Airship”—was transported by wagon to the railhead at Kohatu. For many local farmers, dairying was the backbone of the community’s economy, especially before the rise in wool prices during the 1950s.
Today, much of Murchison’s pastureland and valleys is still home to thriving dairy farms, continuing the region’s farming legacy. The Murchison community is preparing to celebrate Murchison’s 150th anniversary during Easter weekend in April 2026. While the pioneering families who arrived in the 1860s were already leaving their mark, the anniversary date has been chosen to commemorate the first intrepid official mail run in 1876, by the Newman Brothers, from Nelson to Hampden - renamed Murchison in 1882. The mail service quickly became a vital lifeline, linking the town to the outside world.
The celebration, taking place from 3-5 April 2026, promises a weekend full of fun and nostalgia for all ages. Highlights include a parade featuring floats, classic cars, and vintage vehicles; a special dinner; a remembrance ceremony; an old-time carnival; historic walking and self-drive trails; guided bus tours; old Murchison films at the local theatre; a fashion-through-the-ages show; a beard competition; and plenty of opportunities for reconnecting with old friends and neighbours.
Hodgson’s Store, marking its 125th anniversary and 95 years in its current building, will be one of the focal points of the festivities, showcasing old local movie reels and possibly even staff dressed in period costumes for a taste of Murchison’s past.
The weekend kicks off on Friday, 3rd April 2026, with an ‘Old Time Smoko’ meet and greet followed by a weekend of fun events. Pre-registrations are now open, and the first 200 registrations will receive a specially sewn and handprinted goodie bag, 100% locally made.
Pre-registrations are now open at www.murchison.co.nz/150. Stay updated with the celebrations by following the Murchison NZ 150th Celebration Facebook page or by contacting the organising team at [email protected].
The Murchison 150th anniversary celebration will be a wonderful opportunity for farmers, families, and friends to reflect on the community’s rich farming history and look forward to its future.
