Around 50 members of the Nelson Burmese Community stood in solidarity at a Victory Church candlelight vigil on Sunday night to remember the victims of the Myanmar Earthquake.
The 7.7 magnitude tremor that struck on 28 March is a double whammy for the country with the ongoing military coup, and a leader of the Nelson community, Mwe Mwe Htain says the situation was “heartbreaking”.
“Everyone at the moment is really sad and we’re trying to find a way that we can raise money to provide things like food and shelter to those that are affected,” she says.
“At the moment what we can do is come out and show that we may be far away but our thoughts are still with them.”
