Habitat for Humanity Nelson has unveiled plans for the development of 18 new energy-efficient homes at 181 Rutherford St, aimed at tackling the ongoing housing challenges in the Nelson-Tasman area.
The development will feature a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom residences, with some accessible ground-floor apartments. Additionally, a communal green space will provide a place for locals to socialise and enjoy the outdoors. The project is designed with a focus on quality and liveability, providing long-term, affordable accommodation for city workers, families, and older adults.
The project has the support of key partners, including Unite Church, Naylor Love Construction, and Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
It is also backed by a $2 million contribution from Nelson City Council’s Housing Reserve.
With over 1,000 families in the region facing housing insecurity, the need for affordable homes in Nelson is more pressing than ever. The $2 million grant is part of a broader range of housing initiatives supported by the city council.
Nelson Mayor Nick Smith emphasised the importance of the project for the city.
“The shortage of housing is one of our city’s greatest challenges. This development, worth about $14 million, increases supply in the central city area, provides affordable rental properties and delivers intensification in a perfect location.”
Council approved an initial grant of $1 million from its Housing Reserve in August 2022 for the development, which was originally proposed as a partnership with Unite Church.
Habitat for Humanity chief executive Katrina Bach also highlighted the power of collaboration in bringing this project to life.
“The Rutherford St development is a powerful example of what we can achieve when we work together,” she says.
“Through strong partnerships, we can provide much-needed homes for those who require appropriate, affordable housing locally. When organisations unite with a shared vision, we can create lasting change and make a real impact in our community.”
Construction is set to begin in late 2025, with completion expected in 2027.
Project Rutherford Street marks another milestone in Habitat for Humanity’s mission to ensure that everyone has a decent place to live. The organisation continues to work closely with local partners and supporters to create innovative housing solutions that empower families and strengthen communities.
