Sophie Reed’s love for fishing started in childhood, spin fishing with her family in Marlborough.
Inspired by her partner and grandfathers, she took up fly fishing two years ago.
“Fly fishing is an art to learn; it’s technical, challenging, and a lesson in patience,” says Sophie.
She enjoys the peacefulness of being on the river, surrounded by nature, and the excitement of catching fish.
Fly fishing has also given Sophie the opportunity to explore new places, get outdoors, and meet like-minded people. A year ago, Sophie joined Women of The Fly (WoTF) to improve her skills, discovering the group through the Nelson Trout Fishing Club.
“The club’s events helped me learn more about the technical aspects of fly fishing, and without them, I wouldn’t have found WoTF.”
Sophie is excited to see the WoTF group grow and now encourages other women to get involved, inviting them to a free Women’s River Skills Day in Motueka.
“WoTF is a welcoming community for all abilities. If you’re thinking about trying fly fishing, just come along!”
Women’s River Skills Day is on at McLeans Reserve, Motueka Valley, on Saturday 12 April, 10am-3pm. It is being hosted by Women on the Fly NZ and Nelson Fish & Game, with the support of the Nelson Trout Fishing Club.
