Waimea Old Boys took full advantage of a new look Kahurangi as the club rugby season kicked off at the weekend.

The defending champions started promisingly with two early tries at Sports Park, Motueka on Saturday.

“We were on the back foot for a while, but then the forwards took charge and the backs provided the finish,” reflects Waimea Old Boys coach, Scott McKenzie.
Prop Joel Lauvale carried on his outstanding form from last season and loose forward Theo Simone impressed as well.

First five Campbell Parata, who kicked the Tasman Mako into Ranfurly Shield history last year, and Sam Briggs, brought plenty of authority to the inside backs.

“We knew Kahurangi were down quite few of their players from last season, but they will get better,” predicts Scott.

Kahurangi player-coach Mike Wells confirms they had 12 players making their first start for the side.

Waimea now travels to Trafalgar Park this weekend to face Nelson, who gave Stoke a huge scare at Greenmeadows last Saturday.

“Our first four games are on the road but at least two are at the park,” says Scott.
