A quartet of Waimea College athletes starred on Sunday’s final morning session of the South Island Secondary School Athletics Championships.

It was a gold rush over a hectic two-hour session at the Saxton athletics track.
Sienna Todd took out the U15 girls discuss with a throw of 39.47 metres.

She has been a welcome addition to the local athletics scene since her family moved to the region from West Auckland.

Summer Clarke soared 1.54m to take out the U14 high jump and there was also dual success on the track.

Hazel Hunt featured in one of the best finishes of the day in the U15 1500m.
She was headed by Burnside High School’s Milla Boulton as the bell lap sounded.

But Hazel tucked in behind and stormed home over the final 100m to record a personal best of four minutes 55 point 85 seconds.

“My goal was to just stick with her as I have a kick at the end of my race,” says Hazel who had been runner-up in the 3,000m the day before.

“While there weren’t big numbers in my races, the competition was still fast so I am pretty proud of myself,” declares Hazel.

Just two events later, Bella Cain-Townley came out and won the U16 1500m for Waimea College as well in a time of 5.05.69.

On Saturday, Chloe Gordon leapt 10.40m to win the U14 triple jump.
