This month’s Nelson Auto Glass Specialists Local Legend is someone whose compassion touches the lives of countless animals - and people. Brenna Coleman is a tireless advocate for animal welfare, whose work spans everything from fostering difficult-to-home cats to reuniting lost pets with their families. Brenna’s journey began at the age of 12, volunteering at Natureland Zoo, where she helped care for Ricky, a special needs capuchin monkey. That early experience shaped her lifelong commitment to animal care. From there, she spent ten years with Nelson Ark Dog Rescue, training animals for adoption and supporting people going through difficult times. Her own pets are testament to her love: Pixie and Jade, her dogs, and a crew of cats ranging in age from kittens to seniors. Add to that 17 foster cats, seven permanent rescues, and a cat colony, Brenna’s home is a haven for the forgotten.
In 2021, Brenna founded Hunter’s Haven, a rescue effort focused on cats and kittens who have nowhere else to go. It’s a tough space to work in, but Brenna is undeterred. “I know I can’t save them all,” she says, “but I will keep doing it to the best of my ability.” She runs a Givealittle page to raise funds for vet bills, food, desexing, microchipping, and more. Every donation goes directly to giving cats a second chance. Brenna is also the driving force behind the Deceased Cats Nelson NZ Facebook page, a heartfelt community resource, covering areas from Atawhai to Hope, that helps identify and return deceased or injured cats to their families. Her work began in 2017 after helping reunite a cat named Angel with her elderly owner. “I feel the owners' grief, but I know how much it means to have closure,” she says. Let’s celebrate this Local Legend who proves that love, when paired with action, can truly change lives.
