Nelson Youth Theatre Company launched their latest production season yesterday with the opening night of ‘Grease’.
Set in the 1950’s and packed with iconic songs including ‘Summer Nights’ and ‘Greased Lightnin’, the narrative follows Danny and the T-Birds, Sandy and the Pink Ladies, and the Rydell High crowd as they navigate adolescence, relationships, and the conflict between the two.
Whilst all the lead roles were competently performed, particular mention must go to Devan Gavin who offered distinct uniqueness and smooth vocals to the role of Danny, Elias Gonzalez for his slick portrayal of Kenickie, and Lilly Hodson who brought sass and flair to the role of Rizzo. I also commend Reuben Hart for his stage presence and commitment to his role as Doody.
I would recommend the lead performers remain conscious of the delivery of their dialogue, to ensure consistent pacing throughout the scenes and maintain the momentum they’ve worked hard to create. That said, seamless set-changes and the inclusion of the vintage car made for optimal use of the stage and provided a professional backdrop for the storytelling.
Though there were some minor technical imbalances and opening-night jitters, these did not detract from this colourful and high-energy experience. The ensemble filled the theatre with balanced harmonies and equally bright smiles, and the audience responded positively to the larger numbers, such as the song ‘We Go Together’, clapping along and dancing in their seats.
Congratulations to Nelson Youth Theatre Company and everyone who has contributed behind-the-scenes to this rendition of ‘Grease’.
This show has appeal for many and guarantees a fun evening for its viewers. I encourage you to book your tickets while the season lasts, with its conclusion on 26 April.
