A cult hit musical that explores a range of teenage social issues is making its debut in Nelson this week.

Nelson Musical Theatre is bringing the high school drama musical ‘Heathers’ to Red Door Theatre from 30 April – 10 May, with ten shows in total.

Based on the 1989 cult classic film, it tells the story of Veronica Sawyer, a high school student who finds herself in the inner circle of the most popular and ruthless clique at Westerberg High – the Heathers.

Director Alex Davies says it was chosen because of its relevance and popularity with youth.

“It touches on a lot of social issues, particularly pertaining to teenagers -  things like eating disorders, social pressures and bullying.”

The cast, consisting of 16 members, including a few first-timers, has been rehearsing since late January.

Alex says the show is suitable for older teenagers and adults, with the youngest cast member being 17 and the oldest in their mid-30s.

The production features a new creative team for the theatre company, and this is Alex’s first time directing a full musical, with Lillie Prestidge as co-director.

“This is unique for me; this is my first time involved with a show like this where I’m not in the cast… but I have full faith in them, I know they’re going to be amazing,” he says.

“We had an amazing turnout at auditions, it was really hard narrowing down the cast. I think that’s because it resonates with people… it’s something they can relate to.”

Nelson Musical Theatre president Hugh Neill says he was fully on board with Alex’s vision.

“Despite what some people might think, I think young ones don’t always want to do the same musical, they want to do something that stretches them, and this definitely does,” he says.

Paige Gallacher, who plays the part of Martha Dunnstock, describes her character as “innocent, sweet and happy, but gets the brunt of the bullying”.

“I’ve loved this musical for so long, and it is quite popular with the younger generation, just because we all know the music,” she says.

Alex says that people coming to watch the show should be prepared to witness some “complex and serious issues”.

“This is considered a dark comedy, but we are still approaching it with the seriousness these topics deserve. So, if people come in and have dealt with those issues, it might challenge them.

“We are doing everything respectfully and, in the programme, we’ve got information where people can get help if they need it. We’re being very careful and delicate from our production side, making sure everything’s safe and everyone’s comfortable.”

Heathers: The Musical is on from 30 April - 10th May, 7.30pm at the Red Door Theatre. Tickets are available from www.iticket.co.nz
