You can understand why Canterbury golfer Julia Greig loves coming back to the annual Nelson Festival of Golf.

She has won the overall title twice now after accounting for more than 80 golfers, from Northland to Southland, across three courses last week.

“I have been coming to the festival six years now and also won it in 2019,” says the Air New Zealand gates controller at Christchurch Airport.

The key to regaining the title was the 39 stableford points she secured at the Motueka Golf Club course on Tuesday and she backed that up at Greenacres on Thursday and Nelson on Friday.

The Waimairi Beach golfer finished tied with Takaka’s Greg Ryan on 109 points but won on a countback because of her opening 39 at Motueka which was three under her handicap.

“The festival is fun and a chance to meet new people. I am just a social golfer,” insists Julie.

The annual event was run by the Nelson Golf Club and general manager Tony Watkins confirms they were lucky with the weather.

Numbers were down on last year’s 120, a common theme from similar events around the country.
