In celebration of this year’s 25th New Zealand Music Month, Nelson Weekly is interviewing local musicians throughout May. This week Kate Russell gets to know singer-songwriter Eden Copland.
At just 18-years-old, Nelson singer-songwriter Eden Copland is finding her voice not just through melody, but through memory.
Going by the artist name Eden Alice, she has just released her second single on Spotify and is paving her way as a solo artist.
“It started off as a hobby, really. When I was little, I wanted to be famous. I remember from about age seven singing any chance that I could. I just loved it.”
She then began journaling when she was 13, which naturally evolved into songwriting.
“So that’s how it started, and I just kept going. Now I’m writing all the time,” the former Garin College student says.
Influenced by artists like Billie Eilish and Lana Del Rey, Eden says her latest single ‘Not There Yet’ addresses overcoming past traumas.
“The song is about trying to move on and heal, but then there’s so many days where I keep going back into the past,” says Eden, who balances her passion for music with working at a kindergarten.
She also released a song ‘Engraved’ in October last year and is now working on new material. Eden uses digital tools, like Soundtrap, for her music - with plans to incorporate live instruments.
Soundtrap is a cloud-based digital audio workstation that allows users to create music with built-in instruments and loops. Eden says she has been inspired by the amount of “hidden talent” coming out of New Zealand.
“There are a bunch of small artists that I am really inspired by, there is so much out there.”
Eden hopes to release an album in the near future - so watch this space.
