Our May Local Legend, Alastair Cotterill, with feature sponsor, Nelson Auto Glass Specialists owner Polly Bowden.
This month’s Local Legend nominee, Alastair Cotterill, is a man whose impact in Nelson ripples far beyond the tennis courts or school sidelines. A stalwart of the local sports scene and a tireless community advocate, Alastair is a quiet force of nature – one who believes in action over accolades. Reflecting on his long-standing connection with Nelson College and the broader athletic community, he says, “Sports has been a big part of my life, and I just love helping people out.” That simple statement speaks volumes about his ethos: community first, always.
Alastair’s dedication is most visible in Tāhunanui, where his mission to uplift the suburb has become a personal passion project. He’s spent thousands of hours beautifying public spaces since 1989, and improving the local tennis courts, and more than 10 hours each week cleaning up the beach and pathways. “I just see things that need addressing and get it done,” he says. It’s this down-to-earth mindset that has earned him the reputation of being a ‘silent achiever’ – someone who doesn’t seek recognition, but whose impact is undeniable.
Whether mentoring young athletes, painting the courts, or picking up litter along the waterfront and the centre of Tāhunanui’s business area, Alastair brings tenacity and pride to every task. “For me, community is everything,” he explains. “People should not be scared to do things and be proud of their community.” His belief in inclusivity is as strong as his drive: “We live in a diverse society, but there’s no reason we can’t all live on an even playing field.” It’s a philosophy he lives by; one of fairness, initiative, and engagement.
“I want Tāhunanui to be put on the map as one of the greatest places to be,” Alastair says. “Whether you’re a business owner or a volunteer, you need passion, pride, and focus.” In a world where quiet contributions often go unnoticed, Alastair Cotterill stands as proof that meaningful change begins with a single person, a simple action, and a deep-rooted pride in community.
