Time is melting away to find a new home for a Bellyful Nelson upright freezer which annually preserves a third of its delivered vegetable curries and other meals.

The organisation provides up to three nights of meals to whānau with babies or children under 12 who are facing challenges such as illness, bereavement, stress, isolation, pregnancy, miscarriage, or baby loss – regardless of financial situation.

It has four freezers across Motueka, Richmond and Stoke and its Nelson satellite base has been at Baby on the Move at Port Nelson, providing convenience to Nelson’s inner suburb volunteers and meal recipients who include whānau at Nelson Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit.

Bellyful Nelson co-branch coordinator Tracey Marvin says with Baby on the Move relocating to Richmond, the fridge must also break away for a new space to chill within central Nelson by 14 June.

“We’ve had some amazing local support, it’s just this one bit of space that we need, and I’m really struggling to find it,” she says.

“We have only about a dozen police-vetted delivery volunteers, and they would probably access that freezer maybe five times a week, and it can be during working hours. So [the freezer] can be in someone’s garage, on a commercial premises, as long as there’s parking and we don’t depend on their day-to-day activities, then we’re pretty flexible as to where we go.”
