An undetected leak has led to an $1800 water rates bill for an elderly Richmond couple, and they now want to warn others to check their water meters.

The couple, who do not want to be named, are in their 90s and say they were shocked when they opened their latest water rates bill.

‘$1,819.16 will come out by direct debit on 20 May 2025,’ the bill read.

Water rates are billed every six months in Tasman, with the couple’s previous bill being $97.13.

The high bill was due to a water leak under the house, which was later discovered by a plumber.

The couple is now urging others to check their water meters regularly as well as check for leaks around the house.

“We want to make sure people are aware, because when it’s under the house, well, you don’t know about it.”

A spokesperson from Tasman District Council says leaks can be “sneaky” and residents should be checking their water pipes and connections once a month if they are able, as landowners are liable for the cost of the water leaked if it is left on.

They say, if your water consumption seems high, shut off all household appliances and outside taps, go to your meter, and inspect the white (cog) dial.

If you have no leaks the cog should remain stationary, if the white cog continues to spin you may have a leak within your property.

Clues to water leakages include water appearing in a concrete area, wet patches on the lawn or garden, dripping from an overflow pipe, damp areas or a constantly dripping tap or running toilet.
