Armed with a treasure map and a parrot, Richmond School pupils are off on swashbuckling adventure as they take their musical play, Pirates of the Curry Bean, to the Hope Community Church.
One hundred and fifty pupils make up the senior syndicate involved with this year’s play and teacher Grant Irvine says only one of them has had previous theatre experience, so it’s a new adventure for the crew as they take on colourful characters, songs fit for pirates and a witty script.
The piratical musical tells the tale of young twins, Jack and Liza Periwinkle, who yearn for adventure and discover a real treasure map which is then stolen by the infamous Redbeard and his pungent Pirates of the Curry Bean, who also kidnap their mother.
In the race to rescue her, reclaim the map and find the treasure, the twins and their faithful cat, Fiddlesticks, join a mad admiral and his crazy crew on a voyage of adventure from the Old London Docks to a mysterious island.
Grant says it is a production that involves the entire syndicate and is a great way for them to experience something new.
The adventure plays out on stage on 24 June, with a matinee and evening performance on 25 June.
