The Tasman District Council has made improvements to the Berryfield intersection after safety concerns were been raised by the public.
Lower Queen Street has been made safer for road users as part of a process currently underway to make permanent and more significant changes at the Berryfield intersection.
A Tasman District Council spokesperson says the entrance to the NMIT Richmond campus has been closed as a temporary solution, with traffic directed to an alternative access point further west along Lower Queen Street.
Council also says there have been other changes made such as shortening the Berryfield Drive traffic island, widening the main carriageway and adding a new turning lane.
Tasman District Council transportation manager, Jamie McPherson, says the positive outcome wouldn’t have been possible without the support and agreement of NMIT.
Jamie urges drivers to take care while they familiarise themselves with the new and improved intersection layout, while the long term planned upgrade of the intersection is progressing.
The upgrade is expected to include the addition of traffic lights, further road widening, as well as measures to cater for pedestrians, cyclists and buses.
