Driver flown to hospital following Whangamoa crash

A driver was flown to Nelson Hospital with serious injuries last night following a crash on the Whangamoas.

Police say they responded to reports of a single-car crash, five minutes from the Rai Saddle towards Nelson at about 9.45pm Wednesday night.

The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter crew responded shortly after, transporting one patient to Nelson Hospital.

Police confirmed one person sustained serious injuries.

The road was initially closed but reopened by 11:40pm.

Police say the circumstances of the crash are now under investigation.

This was the second hospital transportation for the rescue helicopter crew yesterday.

At about 11.30am Wednesday the rescue helicopter responded to a forestry incident in Motupiko, just south of Kohatu.

Rescue pilot Barry McAuliffe says a woman working on a skid site, where harvested logs are processed, had a log roll onto her.

Barry says the woman sustained a serious leg injury and had to be transported to Nelson Hospital.

WorkSafe say they have been notified of the incident and are making initial inquiries to determine their next steps.
