Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nelson-Tasman celebrated 25 years in the community last week.
The programme started in 1997 as an initiative between Rotary Club of Nelson and police. Programme director Tracee Neilson says since then they have matched over 1500 children with mentors.
“We currently have 172 matches, and we are thrilled at the longevity of our matches. Most last three years on average and some go for many more.”
The Nelson-Tasman branch was the first in New Zealand, and now there are 13 across the country.
To mark the occasion, a celebration was held last Friday night at Bowater Hyundai.
Tracee says with around 50 children on their waiting list they need more mentors, especially males. Email [email protected] to find out more.
