Fire crews are still on the scene of a factory fire in Brightwater that began just before midnight on Monday.

Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) received reports at 11.55pm on Monday of the fire on Factory Rd, Brightwater.

FENZ spokesperson Simon Lyford says upon arrival the 30m by 50m building was "well-involved" with flames.

Simon says the double story factory was holding a lot of wood product.

Firefighters were barred from entering the building and tackling the flames internally due to the risk of a 'dust explosion'.

Four crews from Wakefield, Richmond and Brightwater attended the first call-out before requesting more units.

A further two crews arrived from Richmond and Wakefield before more crews were called on through the night.

A further four appliances were sent to the blaze including an aerial appliance with a large ladder to tackle the flames from above.

With 10 appliances at the scene, water tankers were also called on to assist.

Simon says two appliances are still at the scene this morning alongside a water tanker.

Crews are currently awaiting the arrival of fire investigators to assess the scene and identify the cause of the blaze.
