Greyhounds and their humans hit Trafalgar St as part of the Great Global Greyhound Walk this Sunday morning.

Around 20 greyhounds, and a few allied beagles and bichons, made the walk from the Trafalgar Centre to the Nelson Church Steps with their adoring owners on Sunday morning.

Greyhounds as Pets Nelson volunteer coordinator Olivia Martyn says the event is about raising awareness for ex racing greyhounds making the perfect pet.

"I've had my greyhound Curly for three years. They're so lazy and so easy to look after," she says.

Greyhounds for Pets New Zealand is a registered charity supported by dedicated volunteers from around the country from foster carers, to people who take their dogs to events telling the public what sweet pets they make.

Olivia says there are over 50 greyhounds registered in the region as part of the Greyhound for Pets programme.

This year the hounds dressed in blue as part of Prostate Cancer New Zealand's Blue September and best dressed entries included glittered doggy capes and supermen inspired costumes.

Member, greyhound owner and enthusiast Angela Wilson created bespoke blue capes and collars for not only her three greyhounds, Rocky, Honey and Buddy but for fellow member's dogs too.

"We've had greyhounds for just over 11 years, six greyhounds in total. We love their personality and their temperament," she says.
