The Nelson Farmers Market is moving to Halifax St.

From November 3, the market will be held next door to the Elma Turner Library - where the former Prego Mediterranean Foods building used to be.

The market has been based at Kirby Lane for the past three years, but their lease was recently terminated.

“It has been a good location for us, but Kirby Lane now wants to focus on growing and they don’t see the Nelson Farmers Market as fitting within their plans,” says market manager, Miriam Clark.

“They’ve got to make their space work, so we are moving.”

However, Miriam sees it as a positive step for the market.

“We are going to be able to create a space that’s uniquely ours and it enables us more flexibility. Because it’s a bigger space we can fit in some more stalls. We’ve got a coffee cart coming in and hopefully some more ready-to-eat food.

“We’ve got some new veggie growers lined up as well, so it is really exciting.”

The new site was found with some help from Nelson City Council.

“We approached the council, and they came up with a couple of options quite quickly. They have been really supportive.”

Miriam hopes the high-visibility site will help attract some new marketgoers, and while she knows it won’t be a permanent home, she hopes it will help them increase their profile.

The market is still operating in Alert Level 2 on Wednesdays from 8am - 1.30pm and Saturdays from 8am - 1pm with plenty of fresh, local produce and artisan food products on offer.
