Bike Hub Nelson has been given a makeover thanks to a “labour of love” from one of its volunteers.
Helen Turinsky spent weeks working on the artwork, which covers a once bare wall of Bike Hub’s storage space. The Nelson waterfront scene features the lighthouse, Haulashore Island, the Boulder Bank, the chain fence and, for obvious reasons, a bike.
Bike Hub Nelson coordinator, Matt Lawrey says Helen is a well-known jeweller and painter who spends hers Tuesdays working on bikes at the hub.
“It was a real labour of love... the detail is quite sensational.”
He says public reaction to the mural has been brilliant.
“People just love it. The workshop is housed in a very nondescript concrete bunker of a building and it really adds some colour and life to the place.”
The hub is grateful to Helen and to Resene for supplying the paint free of charge.
