Hundreds of dedicated hours of training came to fruition for local primary schools that took to the stage at the Top of the South kapa haka regional competition last week.

This year’s event was called Kia Hukere Te Hoe 2024, and supporters of each of the teams were blown away by the performers’ confidence, presence and precision, as they poured everything into their performances on the Trafalgar Centre stage.

Nelson Intermediate School Te Pitau Whakarei took out first place in the competition, while Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Tuia te Matangi came second overall.

Parkland School’s Ngā Mātātupu rōpū scooped several category awards to take out third place overall.

The official event photos are still being collated, and Nelson App aims to run a selection of these next week, along with comments from each of the schools.
