Three people have been seriously injured and one moderately injured following a crash between two cars on State Highway 6 this morning.

The head-on collision occurred around 7:35am Sunday morning and involved four people, two from each car, on the outskirts of Wai-Iti, south of Wakefield.

The four victims have since been taken to Nelson Hospital.

Three Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) vehicles attended the scene, one each from Wakefield, Brightwater, and Richmond.

FENZ shift supervisor Lyn Crosson confirmed that victims from both vehicles had been trapped and were successfully rescued by firefighters.

The scene of the accident, the area around the highway’s intersection with Hoult Valley Road, had been closed for multiple hours but is now open with a temporary 50km/h speed limit. Drivers are urged to take extra care when following this route.

The police’s Serious Crash Unit has been advised.
