Fire and Emergency New Zealand were called to tackle two blazes at Nelson Pine Industries’ MDF plant in Richmond Saturday afternoon.

According to FENZ spokesperson Lynn Crosson there were two fires within the Lower Queen St MDF plant.

Two crews from Richmond initially responded to the fires after an alarm activation went off around 4.15pm Saturday.

Lynn says shortly after the alarm activation a 111 call was made in response to a fire in a large chip pile.

Two trucks from Stoke and one from Nelson arrived to assist, discovering a second fire within one of the walls of the building.

“It was all extinguished and contained before 6pm last night,” says Lynn.

There are no reports regarding injuries or to what could have caused the blaze as of Sunday morning.
