As a contemporary artist on the verge of retiring as a professional botanist, I am increasingly focussed on painting, exploring the art world and expanding my horizons. After recent study, I am discovering a new level of freedom and imagination which complements 40 years of painting experience.
I continue to investigate twin themes of botany and figure-work linked, at times, in unexpected ways to create a subtle level of humour and ambiguity. I use strongly outlined and stylised forms, often with vivid colour and bold botanical accuracy.
Serious comment underlying my works highlights ongoing struggles for both plants and women in a world of very mixed agendas.
My Washington Valley home-based studio/gallery in Nelson is open Wednesdays 12-5pm, and by appointment.
