Regional winners of the NZ Dairy Awards, Ricky and Maria Johnson, say they got a lot out of entering the competition.  The whole process took them on the path of self-analysis of their business goals and on farm practices which has been helpful. Ricky and Maria would encourage others to enter the competition, they enjoyed the experience and have gained a clearer understanding of their business and future.

Maria said. “We entered because we were told this year was about hands on farming. The judges were great, and they gave us excellent feedback, we learned a lot from the process. What’s always been good about farming in our region, at Dairy discussion group people will say what hasn’t worked for them. So, entering the competition for us was not about trying to prove we are good.  It was an opportunity for self-improvement and to learn more.”

The couple are fifty fifty sharemilkers with the Rob and Jane McBeth at Maruia, they plan to calf 450 cows next spring in their third season at Maruia. They have two workers who’ve been with them for seven and four years.  Ricky, says “in the regional competition it was their health and Safety, people culture and financial management that gained them the most points.” Going to the Auckland finals was also enlightening for the couple.

They knew they wouldn’t win at National level, but they now know how to use an UBA app.  The President of the Dairy Awards showed them how to download the app and order a UBA, laughs Ricky and Maria.
