Another Quad final for Nelson College

A missed penalty by Wellington College with time expired has seen Nelson College first XV edge into the Quadrangular tournament final after a 34-31 win.

The game-defining kick would have seen Wellington College make the final with the competition's format requiring that the defending champions win to advance.

Instead, Nelson College will face Christ’s College in Wednesday’s final after they won their match against hosts Whanganui Collegiate, 47-33.

After trailing at the break 19-12, a flurry of tries to start the second half saw Nelson College race out to a 10-point lead before Wellington College fought back.

They would retake the lead with a converted try and 10 minutes to play before Timoci Sauira scored with a minute on the clock to take back the advantage.

Wellington College, not to be outdone, fought back to within range to have a chance with first five-eighth Stanley Solomon teeing up his ill-fated attempt in the seventy-sixth minute.

Nelson College coach Jono Phillips says he’s very happy with the win.

“It was a real seesaw of a game, and a great exhibition of secondary school rugby.

“Eleven tries and all the history, pride and the passion.”

He says the game flow was interrupted by a lot of whistle, with both teams struggling to build momentum.

“I thought Harrison Inch, our young year 11 first five-eight was outstanding in his consistency.

“Him and (halfback) Tylah Blake, along with captain Dane Leppin, they were relentless all day.”

After watching Chirst’s game, Jono says they expect a tough encounter in the final, which will also double as their Miles Toyota First XV round-robin game.

“They look strong, with a strong forward pack and really good set piece.

“They’re a good side and have been building nicely all season.”

Wednesday’s games, where Nelson College will be looking to win their fourth Quadrangular in a row, will be live from 11:30am on Sky Sport 1 with the 3v4 playoff before the final at 1pm.
