The NBS Nelson Giants have bounced back with a big win over the Tauranga Whai.

With both teams essentially even on the table and on the cusp of a playoff spot coming into the game, each with a five win and eight loss record, the 84-73 result may have important implications come the end of the season.

Led by Dan Fotu, with a game high 23 points, the Giants started the game in the lead and consistently batted back the Whai attempts to claw their way back into the game.

Having lost against the Whai when the two teams matched up at the Trafalgar Centre earlier this season, the result will also boost the team's confidence as they look to make a late push towards the end of the season.

It all came from the Giant’s defence, with Theo Akwuba’s size around the rim eliminating their chances of getting short shots.

With nine points and ten rebounds, he was unlucky to finish without a double-double in a strong performance for the big centre.

He was instrumental in generating early rebound lead, with the Giants leading 13-3 at the first quarter break, was also important in growing the early lead which they were able to hang on to.

Kobe Langley’s 14 points, s well as four steals and assists, were a handy contribution as he got out to a hot start.

Dan Grida, never to be counted out, was also in the mix again with 14 points and five rebounds to add to his career tally.
