Sports Snippets-Tennis juniors and hockey masters showcased.

Tennis- The Nelson Primary and Intermediate Schools Tennis Championships were held over two days in Richmond last week with some spectacular junior play on show.  Connor Edmonds took out the intermediate boys over Lucas Swarbrick while Ivy Scutt  edged Sabia Longman in the girls. On Thursday, Liam Howes pipped Zac Fleming in the primary boys with Taylor Orme defeating Meg Inwood in the girls.

Hockey- The steely resolve of the veterans was still evident at the weekend during the South Island Hockey Masters tournament held at Saxton Turf. The Nelson men’s over 50’s went on to claim gold while the women’s title was shared between Marlborough and Nelson. Canterbury won both the men’s 65 and over and the under 50 men.

Cricket- The Central Stags are in town as they take on the Otago Volts in its third match of the 2021-22 Plunket Shield at Saxton Oval. Sent into bat on day one on Sunday, Otago compiled 244 in 86 overs, Dale Phillips scoring 113 while Black Cap Doug Bracewell claimed 4/53. Currently at the crease is local boy Greg Hay and Bayley Wiggins who are both unbeaten with the score at 21. Day three gets underway at 10:30am tomorrow.
