Sports Snippets: Stags sit top, Brodie makes return.

Cricket- The Central Stags sit atop Super Smash table after edging the Wellington Firebirds by 14 runs in a thriller at the Basin Reserve on Sunday. Local lad Josh Clarkson provided plenty of fireworks as he blasted 71 from 32 balls including six sixes as the Stags posted 190/4. Central then restricted the Firebirds to 176/7 off 20 overs to take its second win of the tournament. Their female counterparts continue its tough start to the campaign, going down by 64 runs to the Blaze. Set 145 to win, the Hinds were all out for just 79. This Friday the Stags travel to Christchurch to take on Canterbury at 6.40pm while the Hinds will meet the Magicians in the curtain raiser at 3.10pm.

Cycling- The Great Rides in the Nelson Tasman region are set to be upgraded with an $87,000 funding boost from the Ngā Haerenga, the New Zealand Cycle Trails Fund. The NZCT funding is matched by local money, which this year will be a combination of support from Tasman and Nelson City Councils, Trust Reserves and Rotary. On the Coppermine, the trail through the rocky tops and down intro the Maitai requires considerable maintenance. This new funding will allow purchase of rock crushing equipment, to provide a long-term solution to resurfacing remote and problematic areas of the trails.

Bowls- The results of the Waimea Richmond Funeral Services drawn triples tournament held at Richmond Bowling Club Wednesday December 1 are as follows: Bill Hart, Maurice Dodsworth, Trevor Higgs 7/22/42 def. Gavin Sparks, Colleen Bates, Russell Aitkenhead/Don Horne 7/17/44. Third place went to Barry Chinnery, Helen White and Joan Forsyth with 7/17/36.

Multi-Sport- Brodie Seelen will take on his own half Ironman this weekend after the national event was cancelled. Beginning at 8am at Lake Rotoiti, Brodie will swim 1.9km from the jetty, followed by a 90km bike ride, and then a 21 km run. The Nayland College student will do this one year to the day of his bone marrow transplant, a time where he was unable to walk more than a few metres unassisted. Brodie has had another challenging couple of months with the development of Graft vs Host disease, a common complication following bone marrow transplants. Tennis- The Tahunanui Buccaneers took out the Men's A Grade NBS Senior Interclub Spring Competition for 2021 defeating the Hope Top Guns. The clash featured the third and fourth ranked teams as they both upset the top seeds in the first round of playoffs. The Senior Interclub Summer Competition is scheduled for February 2022. The A grade women will play their finals on Tuesday.
