Cody McCarrison’s success over the season had its finality at the Speedway New Zealand Awards night in late July, the 2nz driver awarded Streetstock Competitor of the Year at the Palmerston North Event.
The Nelson Club driver having a ripper of a season, 2nd at the New Zealand Title in Wellington, 3rd at the New Zealand Grand Prix in Stratford, 3rdat the Battle of the Streetstocks in Dunedin and winning the Nelson club championship amongst his many exploits over the season.
It wasn’t just the racing on the track, Cody’s work behind the scenes was invaluable, supporting other drivers including the Nelson Knights Streetstock team and sponsoring the Tri-Series held at Greymouth, Blenheim and Nelson.
A popular figure at many tracks around the country, he was a regular traveller across the Cook Strait to support the North Island clubs as well as many trips South over the season. Cody picked up the Club Competitor of the Year award at the Nelson prizegiving in June.
Cody will be planning to head to Auckland in late January 2025 to contest the NZ Championship and the NZ GP in Napier a week later. The date for the South Island title in Dunedin is yet to be released, while the Tri-Series will take place mid-December, it will be a big year on the road before Nelson hosts the NZ Championship in 2026.
The SNZ Awards night was at the end of the SNZ AGM weekend, a new SNZ president appointed along with new board members including Nelson Speedway club Patron and former Club President Wayne Martin, a fresh board keen to tidy up a few areas, including title allocations and getting the Speedway App up and running. The Nelson Club were strong movers in changing the dysfunctional rotation system into a more manageable appointment system with more flexibility for the clubs.
The club have been busy in the off-season, new lights have been installed around the track, the season calendar is confirmed with the Rees tour extended to 2 nights at the PTS Super Stock Stampede weekend, with an estimated 100+ plus cars touring the South Island tracks in March 2025.
The planning for the New Zealand Super Stock title in January is well underway with new season’s memberships now available via the club website and SNZ season kicks off on the 1st of September with online licences becoming live, the first practice begins on the 14th of September in what could be the biggest season in the club’s history.
