Orange Heavy Rain Warnings have been issued for Nelson Tasman which are scheduled to remain in place until early Monday morning.

Metservice says the warnings were caused by an active front preceded by a “strong and moist” northerly flow, followed by a “broad trough” of low pressure.

“These weather systems are forecast to bring a brief period of heavy rain to northern and western regions, with the largest accumulations likely about the ranges in the north and west of the South Island,” Metservice says.

Metservice says up to 170mm of rain is expected about the ranges in Tasman northwest of Motueka, and up to 60mm closer to the coast.

“Peak rates of 15 to 25 mm/h about the ranges from afternoon and possible thunderstorms from evening,” Metservice says.

The warning period for the area ends at 1am, Monday.

Metservice says Richmond and Bryant Ranges, including Rai Valley could also expect up to 130mm of rain from midday today until 3am Monday morning.

It says under the Orange Warning system, people need to be prepared and take action as appropriate as there could be some disruption to their day and potential risk to people, animals and property.
