A three-vehicle crash on McShane Rd in Appleby left multiple people injured and one person trapped in their car on Saturday.

Police responded to the crash on the corner of Appleby Highway at 12.25pm.

Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson Daniel Reilly says three volunteer crews from Appleby and Richmond attended the scene.

He says one person had to be "cut out" and rescued from one of the vehicles.

FENZ were on the scene for an hour.

A St John spokesperson says there were a total of five patients treated, one of which was in a serious condition.

Four patients were transported to Nelson Hospital, two in a moderate condition and another in a minor condition.

Police say tow trucks were arranged to clear the vehicles.
